How to Stop Your Golden Retriever Puppy from Biting

dogs, golden retriever, playing dogs

Golden Retriever puppies are lovable, loyal, and full of energy. But they can also be very mischievous, especially when it comes to biting things they shouldnt. If youre a proud owner of a Golden Retriever puppy, youve probably experienced the frustration of trying to get them to stop biting your shoes, furniture, or even your hands. While it can seem like an impossible task, there are some steps you can take to help curb this behavior.

Provide Appropriate Chew Toys
The first step in getting your puppy to stop biting is providing them with appropriate chew toys. Chew toys give puppies a safe outlet for their chewing needs and will help keep them occupied for hours. Look for chew toys that are made from soft rubber or durable fabric that wont wear down easily and can stand up against your pups sharp teeth. Also make sure the toys have no small parts that could be chewed off and swallowed by your pup.

Redirect Your Puppy’s Attention
When you catch your puppy in the act of biting something they shouldn’t, redirect their attention immediately. Try calling out their name or clapping your hands loudly to get their attention and then offer them one of their chew toys as an alternative object to bite on instead. This will help teach them that biting certain objects is not acceptable and will reinforce positive behaviors.

Provide Positive Reinforcement
When your puppy successfully plays with their approved chew toy instead of biting on something they shouldn’t, provide positive reinforcement with verbal praise or treats. This will help build a positive association between playing with their toy and being rewarded which will encourage them to continue this behavior in the future. Additionally, consistently providing rewards for good behavior will create a strong bond between you and your pup over time!
