Research First!
Before you even start looking for puppies, do your research. You need to make sure that the breed youre interested in is the right fit for your lifestyle and family dynamics. Golden retrievers are an incredibly popular breed that come with their own set of personality traits and needs. They crave companionship and love being around people so theyre not ideal for owners who work long hours or travel frequently. They also need ample exercise (at least two long walks per day) and plenty of mental stimulation.
Visit Breeders/Rescues
Once youve decided that a golden retriever is the right breed for you, its time to start looking for puppies! Its important to understand the difference between buying from a breeder versus adopting from a rescue organization. If you opt for a breeder, be sure to ask questions about their breeding practices, health screenings, etc., before committing to buying one of their puppies. On the other hand, if you choose to adopt from a rescue organization, make sure that the puppy has been vaccinated and has received all necessary medical care prior to adoption.
Meet The Puppies
Once you have identified potential puppies from either a breeder or rescue organization, arrange visits with them so that you can see them in person and get an idea of their personalities and temperaments before making your decision. During these visits its important to pay attention not just to how adorable they are but also how they interact with other people/pets in the room as well as how they respond when handled or restrained (i.e., gently pick them up). This will give you some insight into what kind of pup they will grow into once they join your home!
